Botanical Honours

Flowers over the ear, flowers beside the face, and the dignity required to tolerate either.

The Yellow Flower Appointment

This photograph is almost too composed for NicoNet. The background falls away, the light hits his face, and a tiny yellow flower is tucked over one ear as though the entire afternoon had been arranged by a stylist.

It was not. That is part of the charm.

For once the Archive has very little to add.

The Daisy Citation

The daisy is tiny enough to miss if you look at the photograph too quickly. Nico does not help by wearing the expression of a dog who has already decided the ceremony has gone on long enough.

The effect is therefore perfect: one very small flower, one very serious dog, and absolutely no reason for either to be presented as official business.

The citation stands.

The Daffodil Contact Incident

The daffodil maintains impeccable composure. Nico does not. He is upside down beside it with enough teeth visible to turn a delicate spring photograph into something much more useful to the archive.

Technically, this is not a flower-over-the-ear portrait. Spiritually, it belongs here more than almost anything else.

No plant was consulted.
