The Stump Years

The stump appears repeatedly in the early field record. It offers elevation without requiring stairs, a respectable surface area, and exactly enough height to make Nico look as though he has been placed there to supervise the forest.

The years change. The trees change. The expression does not change much at all.

If there was a formal appointment to the stump, no paperwork survives.

Forest Scale

There are photographs where Nico fills the frame, and there are photographs that remind you just how much world existed around him. The forest records are better for having both.

In the moss corridor he looks tiny. On the fallen trunk he looks like a surveyor. From ground level he becomes a silhouette against a ridiculous amount of timber.

These are not really portraits of a forest. They are records of Nico moving through one.

The Autumn Files

Autumn briefly turns an ordinary path into a set built specifically to make a brown dog difficult to distinguish from the scenery.

Nico nevertheless remains easy to locate. Look for the eyes, the white chest, or the expression suggesting that the photographer is delaying whatever was supposed to happen next.

The leaves were not collected. They were thoroughly stood in.

The Winter Branch Office

Snow changes the route, the temperature and the acceptable length of a walk. It does not remove the requirement to stop periodically and stare at the person holding the leash.

The winter files are quieter than the beach files. That seems appropriate. Even Nico appears to accept that the forest has lowered its voice.

Operations continued.

The Lookout Department

Whenever the trail produced a view, Nico eventually found a position from which to look at it. Lakes, hills and the entire city below received roughly the same treatment: stop, stare, continue.

It is tempting to project meaning onto these photographs. Maybe he was taking in the landscape. Maybe something smelled interesting in the wind. Maybe he was waiting for everybody to stop taking pictures.

The Archive records only that he looked good doing it.

Department of Applied Stick Handling

The correct stick is rarely the convenient stick. Nico approached this problem with the confidence of a dog who regarded diameter, length and basic jaw geometry as suggestions.

The photographs capture the project at peak optimism. Mouth open, eyes narrowed, enormous branch spanning the frame: a perfectly sensible object to carry if you decline to consider doorways.

No dimensional analysis was performed before acquisition.

The Forest Listening Post

The patrol had progressed without incident until Nico stopped.

Nothing obvious was visible. Human members of the expedition proposed birds, squirrels or wind. Nico declined to disclose his source and continued staring into the trees with the expression of an officer who had just learned that the civilians had not been paying attention.

After an appropriate interval, he resumed walking. Whatever had been in the forest was either gone, imaginary, or now fully aware that Nico knew.

The Western Lookout

Having gained elevation, Nico performed a complete visual survey of the western approaches.

The actual strategic value of the rock was negligible. Its photographic value was immense. Archive doctrine therefore classifies the position as a ceremonial lookout: a place from which no useful command is required because merely standing there already communicates the desired message.

That message was simple: this is Nico’s rock until he gets bored.

The Driftwood Strength Program

Coastal debris was subjected to a rigorous mechanical testing program.

Nico selected a weathered specimen, established jaw contact and applied a load of unknown magnitude. The methodology lacked instrumentation but compensated with enthusiasm. Investigators were unable to determine elastic modulus, fracture toughness or moisture content because the principal investigator was busy chewing the apparatus.

The program ended when the stick ceased to be interesting.
