The Dining Committee

The dining chair photograph remains one of the strongest pieces of evidence for Nico’s belief that furniture becomes official the moment he occupies it. He sits upright, faces the table and looks prepared to hear the first agenda item.

The coffee, puzzle pieces and surrounding human furniture make the whole thing worse. Everybody else appears late to a meeting Nico has been chairing for some time.

No food is visible in front of him. This is almost certainly an administrative oversight.

Public Infrastructure

A public bench introduces a jurisdictional question: does Seating Authority extend beyond the home? The photographic record answers yes with very little ambiguity.

Nico occupies the bench with the calm of a commuter who has been told the next bus is twenty minutes away and intends to spend all twenty judging traffic.

Municipal officials were not consulted.

Resort Administration

Some seats are ordinary. Others are carved, oversized and positioned in places that make Nico look as though he has just inherited the property.

He sat down and immediately looked like the person to whom complaints should be directed. That is not the same thing as ownership, although the distinction becomes difficult to explain while looking at the photograph.

The Archive has chosen not to contest the appointment.

The Snow Throne

Furniture does not need to survive spring in order to qualify. A structure made of snow remains a structure, and a seat carved into it remains, for one glorious afternoon, a seat.

Nico entered the installation, sat upright and converted a temporary mound of frozen water into an executive office.

The throne later melted. The precedent did not.

Maritime Seat Crossover

A boat seat creates an immediate dispute between departments. Maritime Affairs claims jurisdiction because the seat is on a vessel. Seating Authority notes, correctly, that it is obviously a seat.

Nico appears unconcerned with the paperwork. He has already taken the useful part of the arrangement and left the classification problem to everybody else.

The photograph is therefore filed twice, which may be the most realistic bureaucratic outcome in the Archive.

The Adirondack Accession

Nobody formally appointed Nico to the chair. This point is important because later accounts repeatedly describe an election, a ceremony and, in one especially unreliable source, a transfer of executive power. The surviving photograph shows only that an empty Adirondack chair existed and that Nico understood the opportunity immediately.

Once seated, he adopted the expression of a regional governor awaiting a briefing. Passing humans were assessed in silence. Nearby food was noted. The surrounding deck, previously regarded as communal property, entered a short but decisive period of Nico administration.

His tenure ended when he got down. No resignation was submitted.
